In the modern world of today, we have the right to choose any church or religion to worship. We choose the stores and markets to shop. We choose schools to send our children to learn. We choose hotels, motels, rest houses to spend a night. We choose restaurants, canteens, tea rooms to satisfy our appetites. When it comes to hospitals, in case of emergencies, choice is a no play. The nearest hospitals will serve our lives. Hospitals provide a second chance to live to both local and foreigners in any nation all over the world. That is why we need to make these beds, bring necessary supplies and good cooking environment ready for I and I.
In the Malawi Primary Schools system, we would like to build latrines/toilets. The development objective is to reduce the water-born and sanitation diseases amongst Primary school students in selected remote villages throughout Malawi.
Immediate objective is to provide and sustain access to clean portable water and an acceptable form of sanitation. In the targeted schools, there are schools without both water-wells and toilets, and there are schools with toilets and water-wells which are not functioning. (see the attached pictures on the right). The project will target both problems. Maintain both water-wells and toilets which are not in use because they are in bad shape, and will provide new water wells and toilets to those schools which do not have.
INDICATORS:
1. 30% increase in the enrollment of the targeted schools.
2. 20% reduction of water-born and sanitation related diseases.
3. Increase in average number of days students attend school per year.
Note: Even though water and sanitation problems in the target areas are inter-linked, if they can not be done together, there’s need to start with the sanitation issue. Thus the construction of toilets. This is because, students can be using well which are in the near by communities. This is not good for a start.
The introduction of democracy in Malawi in 1994 saw the coming in of free primary education. Schools enrollment in that year increased by 300%. Today the percentage is as low as 110%. This project targets one of the districts whose school drop-out is so severely.
Current statistics in the targeted area.
SCHOOLS:
Average number of students per school = 1,100
Average number of wells per school = 1
Average number of toilets per school = 4
Average number of teachers per school = 7
Other problems faced by targeted group.
1. School Materials ( pens, exercise books, desks, chairs etc)
2. Food (student goes to school without eating anything for 6-8 hours)
3. Travelling distances from their homes to school on bare foot. (schools are far apart)
4. Forced marriages. (Because parents can not support school requirements of their kids, they would rather see them getting married as a way of getting rid of them.
MAIN FOCUS:
1. Construction of water wells 2. Construction of toilets 3. Hygiene education
4. Meetings with selected schools leadership 5. Meetings with school committees
6. Sustainability strategy.
CURRENT ESTIMATED COSTS NEEDED:
Because the problem is so severe in the targeted district, funds can be a limiting factor to help more schools. But any available amount will help us to know how many schools can be targeted. What will be done as of now is to mention the amount of building a new twined toilet and a new water-well.
1. New toilet = $1,500 (One block with five doors) 2. New water-well motorized drilled = $5,800
3. New hand dug water-well = $2,500
The price include a 10% mark up
Advantage of a motorized drilled well.
1. Water supply runs through out the year 2. Fast to construct.
Disadvantages of a motorized well.
1. It is very expensive to construct 2. Very few companies with drilling equipment.
Advantages of a hand dug drilled well. ---- Community participation.
Disadvantages of a hand dug water-well --- At a certain point in a year it dries.
We would also like to provide Scholarships to disadvantaged intelligent students for Secondary up to University level. Studies have shown that a lot of girls quit school when they reach puberty because they can't use open fields as bathrooms. Also a lot of smart kids can't afford to go to Secondary school and College because of poverty. Surely, we might be stopping a future President of Malawi from pursuing further education. This is where the Foundation comes in to rescue at least three out of hundreds who are in need of these services.
We accept monetary donations, equipments, utensils, materials and services suitable for our mission. We are 501 (c)(3) tax exempt registered in the state of Indiana, USA. Write or Call us anytime if you want to donate or volunteer.
